The Scam Behind Social Media Giveaways

One example of a digital media hoax that I have seen online is a fake giveaway scam on social media. We usually see these scams on apps like Instagram, TikTok, or Facebook, and claim that a company/person is giving away free money, gift cards, expensive items, etc. The post often tells people to like, share, and click a link in order to “enter” to win the prize. The purpose of this scam is usually to collect personal information, get more followers, or send people to unsafe websites.

The way this scam tricks people is by making the post look like it’s legit. The account may use a logo, name, and pictures to make it look way more official. When people click the link, they may be asked to enter their email, phone number, or even passwords, which can then be used for fraud.

One time, I realized this post I was watching was fake because the account had very few followers, and the link did not go to the real company website. Also, the post used urgent language like “limited time” or “act now,” which often makes people move through the website faster and not even look to see if it’s real or not. Real companies usually announce giveaways on their official websites, not random accounts.

To avoid falling for scams like this, people should always check the official website of the company, look at the account history, and never give personal information to unknown links. Even though it sounds cliché, if something sounds too good to be true, it probably is. Learning how to recognize scams online can help protect personal information and prevent people from being tricked.

Have any of you fallen for a scam like this?
